Marie Lafranque

Maria holds a B.A. in Child Development from Cal State LA and has dedicated her life to working with children of all ages in different settings; from LAUSD classrooms to after-school enrichment classes, sports programs and more. She is a strong supporter and advocate for children and families seeking alternative education, and is eager to foster a fun, loving, and engaging learning environment for all her students. She is currently homeschooling her own children, aged six and thirteen.

Apart from prioritizing motherhood and homeschooling, Maria has spent the last 10 years being involved with the LA Derby Dolls, a non-profit volunteer-run organization aimed at empowering and enriching the lives of its members through the sport of roller derby, a fast-paced, full-contact sport played on quad roller skates. Now a “retired” skater who can be seen skating occasionally in team bouts, Maria spends most of her time on the sidelines cheering on her oldest daughter, who is currently skating competitively for the league.

Some of Maria’s other interests include cycling, watching documentaries, spending time with family, and exploring national parks with her husband and two girls. Her main mission in life is to continue to learn and grow as a mother, bring awareness to the wonderful world of homeschooling AND roller derby, as well as enriching the lives of the children and families she works with.
